“Punch” Gas Saloon Lighter. Circa 1890

“Punch” Gas Saloon Lighter, circa 1890. This item would have been placed on the counter of a saloon or private club that served alcohol, or anywhere that smoking would have been prevalent. It is more rare than a kerosene cigar lighter as it would have been mounted, rather than placed on a counter top. It would have been attached to a natural gas source. Therefore it was more permanent than portable and probably made commercially rather than for domestic use. This attributes to it being more rare than the kerosene lighters. The gas flame would have come out of the cigar projecting from the mouth of Punch. Dimensions: 8 1/2″ high x 4 3/8″ dia. I have seen photos of a “Punch” saloon lighter like this one  in American saloons from the late 19th century, so it’s date is very definitely late 19th century and probably American, but I am not sure whether or not it is of American or possibly German manufacture. A marking embossed in a shield shows as “R E & S” (see image of underneath base).
The condition is near mint with no flaws of any kind. It is made out of brass.
