This is an all tin vintage wind up toy and a very strong example of “L’ Acrobate” by the “Joustra Toy Company, Paris, France; manufactured circa 1950’s. Quite remarkably, it includes the original lithographed box which is just about completely intact and displays wonderful lithography of the toy. It portrays a monkey “Jo” doing somersaults along the ground and flipping his body forward, balancing on his hands and feet alternatively.
It operates as follows:
*Wind up the toy with the clock work key provided by inserting to the side of the monkey under his shoulder on the left side into the recessed key wind chuck ;
place the body of the monkey down on the ground (see video);
*the monkey rotates and does somersaults continuously for quite some time; the gear system is so well made allowing for this wonderful and extended smooth action
The condition of the the toy is excellent with nice crisp colors and finish to the 99% lithographed surface. The monkey is dressed in green and red hotel bellhop attire with a brown and flesh tone head. There is absolutely no restoration, touch up or repaint of any kind and the toy works perfectly.
As stated earlier it even comes with the elusive original colorful lithographed box which, in and of itself, is quite entertaining on all sides (see images). The idea for this toy was patented and sold during the 1930’s by Louis Marx; so, the Joustra company either purchased or copied the patent information from Marx.
This would be a fabulous addition to a discerning toy collection or as a stand alone item.

Provenance: From my own 45 year old collection of antique and vintage, toys, banks and children’s playthings
Note: After 40 plus years of dealing and collecting toys, I am justly qualified to guarantee and present the authenticity of antique and vintage toys and children’s playthings; important considering the fakes and reproductions in the marketplace. I thoroughly examine with a loop and a black light all of my toys that I offer for sale and I guarantee them to be as I have described.
it would behoove an enterprising collector, dealer, or decorator to take advantage of the opportunity to buy as many of the vintage tin toys that I have listed for sale; it would create an immediate quality collection, as most of these toys came, either from a long time premium California collection or from my own shelves. It would take quite some time and effort to accumulate toys this clean, authentic, original, operable and in excellent condition.
