Child’s Sampler. American Dated “1887”

Charming child’s diminutive needlepoint on linen, American sampler, measuring 10″ x 10″; incorporating the proverbial 26 letters of the alphabet and the numbers 1 through 10. In between are, what looks to be, the maker’s initials “A A O” followed by the date she made it “1887”. A lovely house is stitched below, which, if “hers” would be quite a well to do home. The flag atop the building indicates it could quite possibly be her school. A white tree behind the building with two green trees to the side and in front; with a blue pond or river depicts a rural setting. Two different horizontal patterns and a Greek key border pattern complete the decoration. The sampler is enclosed in a glass front, narrow low key walnut frame. The original backing is still intact (see image) validating it’s 134 year old age. The sampler is in all original condition with no tears, rips, restorations, or repairs. Sampler is typical of late 19th century folk art Americana.
