Child’s rectangular lap top learning desk made by the Shepherd Company, New York, circa 1875. Hinge top lifts up to reveal a double sided chalk board, the interior houses an inkwell in storage compartment provided; a fold out ruler rests where pencils also would have been; a felt wrapped removable work station board reveals storage for (8) double sided learning panels for learning penmanship, promoting art skills, and learning arithmetic. The desk is in all original condition and still maintains the original genesis label attached to the underneath confirming Shepherd manufacture and 1875 patent (see image).

Dimensions: 11 1/2″ wide x 8″ deep x 3″ high in the back sloping down
to 1 3/8″ high in the front

I specialize in antique children’s items and playthings such as toys, board games, learning devices etc. and find this to be a unique item that doesn’t turn up much, especially in complete and good condition such as this example.
