Charming early 19th century fine quality British oil on board; small painting with a lot going on; subject matter. rural scene of two young boys frolicking on white horseback down by the water, dressed in period attire, switch in hand swatting their dog who is barking at them from the handmade pier in the background; all the while, father is back at the barn in the upper left hand corner “shoeing” a horse.
Wonderful detail and attention to extensive foliage, sky and scenery; flowing water, facial expression, and realistic horse posture and position in the water. Colors are predominantly blue with realistic foliage accents, white horse and black dog with brown and white clothing to the young boys. While not officially “signed”, I think it liklely that the letters on the barn “L. Duff” indicate the artist. Regardless, the quality is there and it is a lovely all original period painting.
The painting has been examined and black lighted and is completely original with no touch up or restoration of any kind to the main subjects and body of the painting; with only very minor touch-up to the edge in a couple of places where the painting came in contact with an older frame. Th painting is housed and has been professionally mounted in a period looking contemporary frame.
