American Child’s Sampler, Circa 1887 by “Clara R. Nolan”

Charming American Sampler by “Clara R. Nolan”; well made, bright and colorful, with an intricate needlepoint floral rose petal border in colors of red, pink, white and green, on a grey backdrop. Clara’s name and “June 12, 1878” birthday are bordered by the same floral design as the perimeter along with a green stitched line separating it from the numbers and alphabet above. The upper case is separated from the lower case and numbers by a beautiful, colorful pink, red, and green design different from the border. The upper case alphabet letters are elegantly scripted in a two tone; plum and red; to complement the numerical and lower case two toned plumb and black design below. The sampler is professionally mounted in an antique looking contemporary frame. Of note is the fact that “Clara” has omitted the letter “J” in both the upper case and the lower case alphabet (not sure if her grade was marked down for this!). She also stitches the numbers one through twelve, probably to coincide with her June 12th birthday.

The sampler is all original; there is slight wear and losses above and below the upper case letters “D” through “G” (see images).
