Lithographed paper covered wooden box; late Victorian era entitled “Around The World Trunk” Circa 1890’s, manufactured by The R. Bliss Company of Pawtucket, Rhode Island ( “Bliss” label to the front top panel-see image). Known for their colorful lithographed detail Bliss made doll houses, toys, and learning device toys such as this one which features the image of a particular bird to go along with the corresponding letter being featured. This RARE set is complete and all original with 12 blocks (usually missing); the lid intact; the original brass hinges in back and a holding brass hasp in front to close the trunk. A different bird appears on each block (see images) while the top displays the image of a train going through a railroad station. A multiplicity of different rural scenes decorates the side, front, and rear panels in colors of yellow, blue, white and red. There is some fading, and the top paper litho is “crazed” but does not affect the integrity of the lid itself (see image of top). There is some paper loss here and there to the edges; also to the edges of the blocks; but the paper lithography is secure and well attached to the wooden blocks; structurally very sound and nice visual eye appeal. There has been no restoration to this very desirable and rare piece in original, complete with blocks, condition. This is the larger size 10″ version.
